To join the YouTube Partner Program with ad revenue today, a channel needs 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 valid public watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million valid public Shorts views in the last 90 days. From 1 February 2027, new applicants will need double the watch hours or Shorts views — so the strategies below matter even more.
4,000 hours is 240,000 minutes. You can get there with many viewers watching a little, or fewer viewers watching a lot. The second route is far faster for a new channel.
What counts — and what doesn't
- Counts: watch time on public long-form videos in the last 12 months.
- Doesn't count: Shorts views (they have their own threshold), unlisted, private or deleted videos, and ads.
- Live streams count once they're archived as public videos.
- Bought views, sub-for-sub and view exchanges are against YouTube's policies and can get a channel rejected or terminated.
1. Make longer videos people finish
The maths is brutal: 1,000 views of a 4-minute video at 50% retention is about 33 hours. 1,000 views of a 40-minute video at 40% retention is about 267 hours. Long formats — documentaries, explainers, story compilations, sleep and study videos — reach the threshold with a fraction of the audience.
Length only helps if people stay. Structure long videos in chapters, with a reason to keep watching at the end of each one.
2. Build series and playlists
A viewer who finishes one episode and starts the next doubles their watch time. Group videos into series playlists, end each video by pointing to the next, and use end screens to link them.
3. Fix the first 30 seconds
Most drop-off happens at the start. Open with the most interesting moment, state what the viewer will get, and skip long intros. Check the audience retention graph in YouTube Studio for every video and learn from where people leave.
4. Publish consistently
Watch hours accumulate across a back catalogue. Twenty solid long videos keep earning hours every day; one viral short doesn't. A sustainable schedule — one or two long videos a week — beats bursts.
5. Use Shorts for discovery, long videos for hours
Shorts don't add watch hours, but they can bring new viewers to your channel page, where long videos earn the hours. Link a related long video from each Short.
The maths: how many views you need
4,000 hours is 240,000 minutes. Divide by your average view duration to see how many views you need in a year:
- 2-minute average view duration: about 120,000 views.
- 5-minute average: about 48,000 views.
- 10-minute average: about 24,000 views.
- 20-minute average: about 12,000 views.
- 45-minute average (common for sleep and ambient content): about 5,300 views.
A realistic 12-month plan
The 12-month window rolls, so hours from videos published early in the year eventually drop out. A back catalogue that keeps getting watched is what carries you over the line.
- Months 1–2: publish 8–10 long videos in one niche; learn from retention graphs.
- Months 3–4: double down on the topics that held viewers; start a series.
- Months 5–8: keep a steady weekly schedule; add Shorts that point to long videos.
- Months 9–12: build compilations and longer “full story” videos from your best topics.
Things that look like shortcuts but backfire
- Making every video 3 hours long without content to fill it — viewers leave and YouTube stops recommending it.
- Looping the same footage or audio — likely to be treated as repetitive, inauthentic content.
- Asking friends to leave videos playing — artificial engagement can be detected and removed.
- Watch-hour services — against YouTube's policies.
How DreamTuber helps
DreamTuber is built for the long formats that earn hours: one topic becomes a chaptered, narrated, illustrated video from 10 minutes to 10 hours. A finished hour costs about 260 credits; the $39/mo Plus plan (350 credits) covers one hour-long video, and Starter ($20/mo) covers three 10-minute videos.
Make one with DreamTuber
One topic in, a finished long-form video out — script, voice, visuals, and render, automatically.
