A video with 10,000 views and a video with 2,000 views can be worth very different amounts — and it isn't always the first one that's winning. Views and watch time measure different things, and YouTube uses them differently for monetisation, recommendations and pay.
What each metric means
- Views: how many times the video was watched (counted once a viewer intentionally starts watching).
- Watch time: the total minutes or hours people spent watching.
- Average view duration: watch time ÷ views — how long the typical viewer stayed.
- Average percentage viewed: average view duration as a share of the video's length.
Which one YouTube cares about for…
Monetisation eligibility: watch time. The Partner Program's long-form route is measured in public watch hours (4,000 today; 8,000 for new applicants from 1 February 2027). Views only count on the Shorts route.
Recommendations: YouTube says it aims to recommend videos viewers will watch and be satisfied with. That's measured with watch time, retention, survey responses, likes, dislikes and “not interested” signals — not views alone. A clickbait title that gets views but quick exits tends to stall.
Pay: ads are paid per ad impression, so it's views where ads were shown that earn — but longer watch sessions create more chances for ads (including mid-rolls on videos over 8 minutes). In practice, more watch time usually means more revenue.
Growing both without gaming either
- Views come from packaging: title and thumbnail that make a promise (see our CTR guide).
- Watch time comes from keeping the promise: a strong first 30 seconds, clear structure, no padding.
- Series and playlists turn one view into several.
- Long formats where viewers want to keep watching (documentaries, stories, sleep) multiply watch time per view.
Where to see both in YouTube Studio
- Overview tab: views and watch time (hours) for the channel.
- Content tab: views, average view duration and impressions for each video.
- A video's Engagement tab: watch time, average view duration and the audience retention graph.
- Advanced mode: compare watch time per view across videos to find your strongest formats.
When views matter more
Views aren't irrelevant. Sponsors often look at average views per video. Shorts monetisation is measured in views. And a high view count with low watch time can still be useful for discovery — if those viewers go on to watch your long videos. The trick is knowing which metric your goal depends on.
Metrics that combine both
Tracking these four alongside views and watch time gives a much clearer picture than either headline number on its own.
- Average view duration: watch time per view — the bridge between the two.
- Average percentage viewed: how much of the video a typical viewer watched.
- Returning viewers: whether views come from people who'll watch again.
- Subscribers gained per 1,000 views: whether views convert into a loyal audience.
Raising watch time on existing videos
- Add chapters so viewers can find what they want instead of leaving.
- Add end screens pointing to the next video in a series.
- Group videos into playlists that autoplay in a logical order.
- Pin a comment linking the follow-up video.
A quick worked example
Video A: 10,000 views × 3 minutes average = 500 hours. Video B: 2,000 views × 25 minutes average = about 833 hours. Video B did more for the channel's watch-hour goal with a fifth of the views — the reason long-form faceless channels can reach the Partner Program with modest audiences.
DreamTuber is built for that kind of video: narrated, illustrated, 10 minutes to 10 hours, about 260 credits per finished hour.

Is high average view duration good?+
Yes — it's one of the clearest signs viewers are satisfied.
